Introduction
A dramatic hostage crisis unfolded in Balochistan’s Bolan district as terrorists hijacked the Jaffar Express, holding innocent passengers—including women and children—captive to delay security forces' rescue operations. Terrorists Attack Jaffar Express, Take Passengers Hostage
On Tuesday, militants carried out a well-coordinated assault on the Jaffar Express, traveling from Quetta to Peshawar with around 400 passengers on board. The attackers blew up a section of the railway track, fired upon the train’s locomotive—injuring the driver—and forced the train to a halt near a tunnel in a remote mountainous region.
Security sources revealed that the terrorists strategically divided hostages into three locations, using them as human shields to hinder the rescue operation.
Daring Military Operation: Hostages Freed, Terrorists Neutralized
In a meticulously planned response, security forces launched a day-long counter-offensive, prioritizing the safety of innocent lives. After hours of intense combat, at least 155 hostages were successfully freed, while 27 terrorists were eliminated.
Despite the complex terrain and high-risk conditions, security personnel pledged to continue operations until the last terrorist is neutralized. The forces had to navigate treacherous routes in the Mushqaf area near the Afghanistan-Iran border, making the mission even more challenging.

"There was gunfire everywhere, but by the grace of Allah, the army and FC personnel rescued us," said one of the freed passengers.

"I can’t find words to explain how we survived. It was terrifying."
Train Services Disrupted as Authorities React
As a precaution, railway officials suspended the Bolan Mail and Jaffar Express for three days, halting operations from Quetta to other regions. The Quetta-Chaman passenger train has also been temporarily halted.

Security sources disclosed alarming details about the attackers’ operational tactics. Reports suggest the militants used satellite phones to coordinate with international handlers, including masterminds based in Afghanistan.

In response to the crisis, the Balochistan government declared an emergency, deploying all necessary resources. A relief train and additional security forces were dispatched to the site, while hospitals in Sibi and Civil Hospital Quetta were placed on high alert.

According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), January 2025 witnessed a 42% surge in terrorist incidents, with 74 attacks recorded nationwide, leading to 91 fatalities and 117 injuries.
Balochistan remains a hotspot for insurgent activity, with 24 attacks reported in January alone, resulting in 26 deaths, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and nine militants.
Government's Firm Stance: “No Concession for Terrorists”
The Pakistani government remains resolute in its stance against terrorism. PM Shehbaz Sharif vowed to continue counterterrorism efforts until every last militant is eliminated.
"These terrorists have no relation to Islam, Pakistan, or Balochistan. Their sole agenda is to disrupt peace and hinder development," the PM stated.
